Tombstone.- Two dozen of the world’s best fast-draw competitors will be in Tombstone on April 21 and 22 for the World’s Fastest Professional Gunfighters masters championship.

The free event is open to the public, and will be held during daytime hours at the Old Tombstone Western Theme Park at 339 S. Fourth Street.

The venue was specifically chosen because of the sightlines provided for spectators, according to WFPG production director Levi Jordan. “We want people to come out and see the best of the best from around the world compete,” Jordan said.

“Plus, it’s just cool to be in Tombstone!” Saturday will feature a round-robin faceoff among all the competitors, followed on Sunday with a high noon showdown between a handful of the top shooters.

The gunfighters all use a .45 caliber single-action Colt revolver. WFPG co-founder Bob Meyers said the matches are electronically timed, with a starting light similar to what’s used in drag racing. The competitors stand side by side and shoot wax pellets at a target 14 feet away, which has an impact sensor.

“Most of the competitors taking part in the masters championship routinely score in the 0.37 of a second range, while a few are members of the .300 Club, meaning they have timed at less than one-third of a second,” Meyers said.

Several of the competitors will be at the event site on Friday for a public meet and greet, Jordan said.
