Tucson.- After more than sixty years in business, the historic Tucson Inn Motor Hotel officially has a new owner. Pima Community College purchased the building Monday for a little more than $1 million. The motel sits next to PCC’s downtown campus. Officials say they’re not sure how they’ll use it just yet, but it will be part of the college’s ongoing expansion efforts.

“We're going to do a comprehensive assessment to see how the college can best use this property,” said PCC Downtown Campus President, Dr. David Doré. Tucson Inn was built in 1953, and its neon sign and proximity to downtown made it one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. But City Code Enforcement shut the doors of the motel in 2016 for violations, citing unsafe building conditions and criminal activity.

The building’s owners originally expressed interest in renovating and re-opening, but instead decided to sell. Doré said the ownership might have changed, but the building’s iconic sign will stay. “We're really excited that Pima now will really be able to restore that sign and really bring it back to its original glory,” he said.
