NOGALES : Tienen empleo seguro : 17, 547....están desempleados: 1,836

Nogales, Az.- The number of people employed in Santa Cruz County jumped in December, as did the number of people considered officially unemployed. According to data released last Thursday by the Arizona Department of Administration, there were 17,545 people employed in the local economy in December, an increase of 280 from November. At the same time, the number of people seeking unemployment benefits in the county rose by 135, from 1,701 in November to 1,836 in December.

That change more than offset job growth in terms of the county’s unemployment rate, which rose to 9.5 percent in December from 9 percent in November. Of Arizona’s 15 counties, only Yuma (15.7 percent) and Apache (10.3 percent) had higher jobless rates than Santa Cruz in December 2017. The increase in both employed and unemployed people last month was reflected in an overall growth in the local workforce, which increased from 18,966 in November to 19,381 in December.

A year ago, state data showed 17,695 people with full employment in Santa Cruz County in December 2016, as well as 1,667 people considered officially unemployed. The local jobless rate in December 2016 was 8.6 percent. Statewide in December 2017, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate ticked up to 4.5 percent from 4.3 percent in November. The U.S. jobless rate remained unchanged at 4.1 percent. A year earlier, the Arizona seasonally adjusted rate was 5 percent and the U.S. rate was 4.7 percent.
