SKY HARBOR : Aprueban honrar a McCain con la Terminal 3

Phoenix.- Phoenix City Council approved a proposal Wednesday to rename Terminal 3 at Sky Harbor after Arizona Sen. John McCain. The renaming cost is estimated to be $60,000. The Council first voted to support the renaming measure after it was proposed by Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton in November.

According to a release, the proposal earned "unanimous support" from the city’s Heritage Commission -- the citizen-led board that reviews proposals to name city facilities. Despite the unanimous support Wednesday, council members Michael Nowakowski and Laura Pastor argued for more transparency and diversity in naming decisions. According to a release, Terminal 3 is in the middle of a $590 million "modernization." The "long-outdated" terminal is expected to have a new south concourse, 15 new gates and a remodeled north concourse by 2020.

And when it's completed, a new name too. “I’m deeply humbled by the Phoenix City Council’s decision to designate Terminal 3 at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in my name," McCain said in a statement. "I have rarely felt at once so honored and yet so unworthy of an honor as I do today."

The airport's Terminal 4 is named after former Arizona Sen. Barry Goldwater. “Senator McCain has given so much of himself to our country, to Arizona and to Phoenix. Giving something back to an American hero, a former naval aviator, and a 30-year member of the U.S. Senate is the least we can do,” Stanton said in a release.

“It’s perfectly fitting that our busiest terminals at Sky Harbor would be named for two of Arizona’s best-known aviators and most impactful public servants – Senator Barry Goldwater and Senator John McCain.”
