Vehicle fire leads to marijuana discovery

Douglas.- A vehicle fire Thursday morning led to the discovery of a load of marijuana. According to Sgt. Jose Duarte of the Douglas Police Department, at approximately 10:25 a.m. his department received an anonymous call from a concerned motorist, stating the vehicle, with Sonoran plates, was traveling in the area of Fourth Street and G Avenue, and appeared to be overheating. 

 The caller also advised that the vehicle was also leaving a strong smell of burnt marijuana as it traveled northbound. The vehicle was located by Douglas Police Officers in the area of Ninth Street and Pan American Avenue, where it was still heavily smoking and had a strong odor of burnt marijuana.

As officers began to make sure that the female occupant in the vehicle was safe, the vehicle began to catch on fire. The Douglas Fire Department responded and upon opening the hood of the vehicle, discovered several packages of marijuana in the engine compartment, some of which had caught fire. 

 The fire was quickly extinguished and the driver of the vehicle was detained for further questioning. Sgt. Duarte said the driver has not been arrested and no information about her is being released at this time.

The vehicle and evidence were transported to the Douglas Police Department for processing and the investigation is continuing, he stated. “Remember that if you ‘See It, Report It!’,” he said. “(The) Douglas Police would like to thank the concerned motorist for reporting this incident to Douglas Police Department, which led to the discovery of marijuana and the detention of the driver.” If you have any questions or concerns about suspicious activity, call the DPD at (520) 417-7550.
