Nogales.- The local economy added jobs for the third consecutive month in November as the produce import industry ramped up for its high season. Statistics released last Thursday by the Arizona Department of Administration show 17,256 people employed in Santa Cruz County in November, up from 16,808 in October, 16,605 in September and 16,532 in August.

At the same time, the number of officially unemployed people in the county dropped to 1,702 in November from 2,083 in October, 2,280 in September and 2,377 in August. As a result of those trends, the local unemployment rate fell to 9 percent, the first time it was less than double digits since June. Even so, Santa Cruz had the third-highest jobless rate among Arizona’s 15 counties in November, trailing only Yuma (15.6 percent) and Apache (9.2 percent).

What’s more, the number of people working in Santa Cruz County last month was 232 less than in November 2016, when 17,488 people had jobs in the local economy, according to state data. The number of people seeking unemployment benefits in November 2016 was 1,758, slightly more than last month.

At the state level, Arizona’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased from 4.5 percent in October to 4.3 percent in November. The U.S. seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained at 4.1 percent. A year ago, Arizona’s rate was 5 percent and the U.S. rate was 4.6 percent.
