DHC welcomes new member

Douglas.-  Maria Lourdes Urias owner of Glam along with her son Emmanuel, various family members and Ralph Robles and Arturo Escalante of the Douglas Hispanic Chamber of Commerce cut the ribbon after Glam joined the chamber Friday. Douglas’ Hispanic Chamber of Commerce welcomed a new member Friday. Glam, a clothing and accessories store who just this year added cosmetics, is located at 805 G Avenue has been open for nine years but waited until recently to join the Douglas’ Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

The store first opened in 2008 and has been in its present location since then. Emmanuel Urias, who along with his mother Maria Lourdes Urias, run the store, said they decided to have a celebration at their store celebrating their membership. “We wanted to have a ribbon cutting and celebrate with some food and drinks for our customers,” Emmanuel said. He said being on G Avenue Glam has had both the ups and downs but this past year has been especially slow. “We have a lot of loyal customers who keep coming back and good prices,” he said. “A majority of our customers are from Mexico. …

The peso has had a big impact on us.” Arturo Escalante, Director for the Douglas’ Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, said Glam’s joining the chamber brings the total to 25 members now. “We’re growing fast,” he said. “This week we had JC Penny, Walmart, Agua Life on G Avenue … were picking up momentum.” Escalante said he would like to see all these businesses work together and communicate with each other so as downtown improves they can all work together towards the growth.

“Who is the best to tell us other than our business owners,” he said. “We need to do something to bring attention to the downtown businesses whether is be a fashion show or something.” The Douglas’ Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is going to have a mixer this Friday, Nov. 3 at Cilantros on G Avenue from 6-8 p.m. “Anybody can come,” Escalante said. “We’re trying to showcase Douglas and show that we are still alive and pretty much open for business.” The group also meets monthly at various members businesses. “The chamber is nothing without the businesses,” he said.”We want to talk and work with each other about the possibilities of Douglas.” Glam’s hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday; 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday.
