Phoenix.-  American Airlines announced Tuesday that it will cancel nearly 40 flights arriving in or departing from Phoenix due to forecasts calling for extreme heat, Fox 10 reported. According to a statement from American Airlines, regional flights under the American Eagle brand use the Bombardier CRJ aircraft, which has a maximum operating temperature of 118 degrees.

Tuesday's forecast for Phoenix, Arizona, calls for a high of 120 degrees. The cancellations apply to flights that are arriving or departing Sky Harbor Airport between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. local time. Customers are expected to reschedule their flights or they may receive a refund, according to the airline.

According to the airline, extreme heat can hinder their plane's ability to take off. The higher the temperature climbs, the more speed a plane needs to get off the ground. 3 of 5 4 of 5

The canceled flights come weeks after President Trump pulled the U.S. out of the Paris climate accord. Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton, a Democrat, said the city could face economic and ecological turmoil due to high temperatures caused by climate change. "Here in Arizona, extreme heat as a result of climate change is a huge issue," Stanton said in a public statement. "This is not a hypothetical debate. It's happening in real time here in Arizona. 5 of 5
